I have been scoping out a handheld emulator and this one catches my eye the most.  I notice that all of the emulators that I looked at had issues with them naturally but none really more than the other.

I am looking to play some old FF games on these, like 2 and 3 for SNES and maybe mystic quest.

I noticed the SNES emulator is kind of flakey on this thing, has anyone played these games on here?  Are the problems really that noticable?  Do they matter on a game like FF?

How easy is it to update and how often are they updating this thing?  I dont mind buying a work in progress.

Thank you, any honest opinions you can give would be great.

the snes emulator is fine, the biggest let down is that it it skips a few frames, but it is totally playable. Starfox and some other 3d games wont work, bearing that in mind, i think you'll be very pleased with it overall, all the major problems with the dingoo have already been worked out.

Thank you both for your help.  Since I see you just got this device, can I ask which firmware version came with your device?

Mine came with the 1.03 but I immediatly flashed it to the 1.20 POF custom english firmware for the native OS. I'm very happy with the results.

Sounds good, I guess if it was too bad I think they remade those FF games for GBA under the japanese numbers though so ithink 2 is really 4 in japan and 3 is 5 or something like that.  But let me know if you test those out, I think I will be purchasing one either way.  Any recommendations from where I should purchase?

The biggest problem with the SNES emulator is the sound. It's HIGHLY noticeable, and if you'd be bothered by that, then then you'll be very disappointed. The other biggest problem is probably the iffy compatibility. There are a handful of fairly major SNES games that just aren't supported, including Super Mario Kart, Starfox, Mega Man X 2 & 3, and even some like Soul Blazer and Secret of Mana.

Updating the device is as simple as it can be. Yo just download the file, transfer it to your Dingoo, power it off, then power back on while holding 'down' on the d-pad and it takes care of the installation. So far, it's only been updated once since I've owned mine (about 4 months) and you should know that the firmware updates don't necessarily update any of the emulators at all. This last update happened to fix a conflict from pressing the Y and B buttons simultaneously while using the SNES emulator (which is pretty major, when you think about games like Super Mario World or Mega Man X).

I think the best hope for SNES is for a homebrew developer to make an all new SNES emulator, or port one like ZSNES or SNES9X.

There's also the option of installing the Dingux operating system, which boasts the advantage of running any Linux compatible SNES emulator. The disadvantage to that is the potential hazard of installing this unofficial OS, and the fact that TV out isn't support yet by Dingux.

The NES and other emulators are really very good, with high compatibility and often nearly perfect results. I've only noticed minor, non-intrusive graphical flaws in quite a few NES games, and I've only run into about 20 games that just won't run on it. Those are mostly the Wisdom Tree Biblical games, and Werewolf by Data East. You'll find GBA is probably the best of the bunch.

Any idea why SNES is so buggy?  The SNES had a lot of sweet games for it typically IMO any game that was on both genesis and snes was better on the snes cuz of the controls.  So you would think they would make this a priority to iron out and fix.   What is the deal with the sound, does it sound like a garbage disposal or something, is it quiet, too loud, choppy etc...?

Well I'm not sure as to the best place to buy it, But I do know that if you purchase it from Thinkgeek.com at $99.00 They are willing to return it within 30 days if there is a problem. they also have a quick responding support team to help you with your issues, should you have them. If your into getting the cheapest deal then I think you could find it cheaper somewhere else, but remember, these things seem to have a few problems so I would get it somewhere that can replace it if your worried about it.

FF2. Worked great. Sound was good and movement was smooth.FF3Bad. Sound was terrible. Movement was slow even after fiddling with frameskip. Just didn't feel right.FF:Mystic QuestFrooze, would never work for me.Something to keep in mind is that the GBA emulator works great. So if these games are available on GBA you could easily play them on the GBA emulator with great sound and smooth movement.

Personally I'm waiting for a better SNES emulator onthe native OS.
