Hi, everyone. Just wondering, does the R4 or Games 'n' Music for the DS work with ROMS? If so, for what systems? I'm considering getting a DSi. Another thing is can the R4/Games 'n' Music play MP4/MP3's? Thanx.

You might want to do a bit more research on the DSi.  As far as I am aware the DSi is not compatabile with the R4 or any other cards like it.  I know there is an R4i card out there but again, check with what model DSi you will be using it with as well as I know the DSi was made so it was very hard to get pirate software working on the system.  You may be better off getting a second hand DS Lite as they would be a much safer option.

R4i cards works on the DSi. But if you have a DSi with firmware 1.4, you need to make sure that the R4i card is upgraded to be used with 1.4.  You can upgrade them yourself, but you will need the old DS to be able to flash the flashcard with the updated software. Check out gbatemp for more info on the subject.

The DS and the DSi are both very weak systems when compaired to other handhelds. The ds's main core is 67 mhz and the secondary processor is only 33 mhz. It only has 4 megs of ram. I'm guessing that the emulators on the ds anything above nes would run very poorly. I almost got an R4 for mine for legacy emulation, but when I found out the specs of the DS I decided just to get a Dingoo.

There's a comparison table in our FAQ, which shows the specs for the A320 and the various models of DS.

The Dingoo is way better - CPU, screen resolution, RAM - it leaves the DS standing.

Wow. The dingoo literally destroys the DS lite. I've changed my chioce for various reasons. Below they're listed

  1. Price: Extremly cheap for what you get
  2. Size: nice and portable
  3. Multimedia: Plays Vids, Music, Games and all, compared to R4's 32bit games and MP3

There ya go. I might have enough by my brother's next birthday or around Christmas.

I own a DS lite. I haven't tried too many emulators on it but I can tell you right now that the NeoGeo emulation on the DS totally smokes the same emulation on the Dingoo even with it's smaller processor using the NeoDS emulator. Not only that but the build quality and control of the d-pad on the DS is oh, say, about 100,000 times better as well.

I've had the Dingoo for about a month now and aside from the d-pad sucking a fat one, I've had to hard reset the unit dozens of times with a paper clip because it locks up running roms. Something that's never happened to me on the DS at all!

So faster processor or not, I'm sorry but the DS is a far superior handheld. There simply is NO comparison.

It's probably better to get the iEdge card as opposed to the R4i; not only is the former more advanced (its software is far more adaptable and its access speed is superior to any other card of its kind), but it also comes pre-loaded with the MoonShell Media Player.

Ironically, though, DS games look much better than anything the Dingoo can emulate...

You guys actually make the DS sound so much better. Plus, I'd not only be able to emulate perhaps all the Dingoo emulates, I could also do DS roms! An added plus! I mean, firmware and stuff isn't that big of a deal to me, not even Linux,  just GBA, Genesis, and SNES emulation. They're my 3 favorite 'older' consoles.
